Dev Update - The Crew Panel

The Crew panel: see what your crew is doing and why

Hey everyone,

This one is about visibility. The game has always had a lot going on under the hood. Your crew members have priorities, plans, and conditions that gate what they can do. Until now, most of that was invisible. You'd look at a gang member and see "Idle" and have no idea whether that meant nothing was set up, or they'd just failed something, or they were waiting for a condition to clear.

That changes today.

The Crew panel

There's a new panel accessible from the main HUD. It shows a read on every gang member you control. Portraits on the left (real ones, pulled from the same character art as the rest of the game). Click a portrait to switch to that member.

The right side shows two things: what they're doing right now, and what isn't working. Click View Details in the header to open the full character dossier for whoever is selected: traits, history, relationships, everything.

The action chain

When a gang member is executing a goal, the panel shows the full plan as a sequence of cards, left to right, in order. The currently executing step is highlighted. The next steps are queued behind it.

Each card shows what the member is actually doing in plain language: "Searching for a drug addict to sell to." "Directly handing drugs to a buyer." "Locating a buyer for a large drug shipment." These are pulled directly from the goal definitions, not generated on the fly.

If an action has a resource requirement (a minimum cocaine amount, for example) the card shows that too. So if an action can't run because they don't have enough product, you can see exactly what's missing and by how much.

The chain scrolls horizontally if a goal has many steps and fades at the right edge when there's more to scroll.

What's stopping a goal and what to do about it

Below the action chain, the panel lists goals that exist but can't execute. Not because the player disabled them, but because the world isn't set up for them yet.

Each blocked goal shows a plain-language explanation of what's stopping it and what you can do about it. "Place a Drug Corner, it attracts addicts to your territory and keeps them coming back." "Buy a property and convert it to a Stash House so members can secure product." These hints are part of the game data, not guesswork.

When a goal fails and goes into cooldown, the panel now says why and what to do:

Couldn't complete - can't find a buyer. Will retry shortly.

And below that, if the failure has a known cause:

Addicts were present but out of reach at the moment of sale. They may have gathered at a rival Drug Corner nearby. Place your own Drug Corner to draw buyers in and keep them in your territory.

We've added hints to the most common failure cases: can't find a buyer, can't find a supplier, no wholesaler available, no laundry front reachable. More will follow as we identify the failure modes players actually hit.

Status labels in plain language

Every goal in the panel has a status chip. We rewrote the ones that didn't make sense to a player.

COOLDOWN is now RESTING. The goal tried to run, it failed, and the AI is waiting before trying again. "Cooldown" is a developer word. "Resting" tells you what's actually happening.

NOT READY is a new state for goals that scored well but can't execute yet. One of the steps in the action chain has an unmet requirement. The panel highlights the blocked step and shows what's missing.

BLOCKED stays BLOCKED.

Priority Factors, not Weight Calculators

The section that shows why a goal is prioritized the way it is was labeled "Weight Calculators." It's now labeled "Priority Factors."

These are the inputs that decide whether the goal runs right now: drug addicts in range, inventory level, time of day, heat. They're not a live status report of what happened when the goal actually executed. Renaming it makes that distinction clearer.

All Off

The panel has a bulk action button at the top of the goal list: All Off. It sets every player-controlled goal priority to zero in one click. System and personality goals are left untouched. Useful for testing, or when you need to hard-reset a member's behavior.

The goal is for a player who opens this panel for the first time to understand their whole operation in under a minute. Not just what each member is doing, but why it's working, why it isn't, and what the next move is.

More soon.
